In 2009 friends and I went for a trip to Berlin to visit other friends. Even though we live quite close to the capital of Germany, there are not so many opportunities for a visit.
We did a LOT of walking this day and went from the Alexanderplatz with the TV Tower, to the Rote Rathaus (seat of the Berlin Senate), where the Neptunfountain is close by and to the Berlin Cathedral. We also went to see the Reichstag (seat of the Bundestag), the German Chancellery and all the modern buildings along the River Spree, like the Paul-Löbe-Haus and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus and back to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (central railway station).
The new central station lies close to the River Spree and is apparently the largest fly-over crossing main station in Europe (according to Deutsch Bahn). It was opened in 2006 and has lots of floors with all kind of shops in it and in my opinion not enough places to sit in case your train is not on time, which imho is quite often (even though we should not complain the trains arrive eventually and they always come up with solutions to get people from A to B). To be honest it is a very fascinating builing, lots of angles, light and structures throughout the station, even the elevators look elegant (also they take ages to pass each level, one is quicker taking the stairs).
Wir sind an dem Tag sehr viel gelaufen; vom Alex mit dem Fernsehturm, am Roten Rathaus entlang zum Neptunbrunnen sowie zum Berliner Dom. Außerdem sind wir zum Reichstag gelaufen, haben uns das Kanzleramt und die modernen Gebäude entlang der Spree angeschaut, wie dem Paul-Löbe-und Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus. Danach sind wir zurück zum Hauptbahnhof gegangen.
Der neue Hauptbahnhof liegt gleich neben der Spree und ist anscheinend der größte Kreuzungsbahnhof Europas, laut Deutsche Bahn. Er eröffnete 2006 und hat einige Etagen mit sehr vielen Geschäften und meiner Meinung nach nicht genug Sitzmöglichkeiten; gerade wenn man lange warten muss weil der Zug Verspätung hat, was doch recht oft vorkommt (aber wir sollten uns nicht beschweren, da er irgendwann eintrifft oder eine Lösung gefunden wird, dass die Leute doch noch von A nach B kommen). Es ist aber ein recht faszinierendes Bauwerk, mit vielen Winkeln, Licht und Strukturen und sogar die Aufzüge schauen chic aus (auch wenn es ewig dauert bis sie ankommen, man ist zu Fuß weitaus schneller).
