In autumn 2014 a friend and I went to the Olympiastadium in Berlin. It’s quite an impressive ensemble. If you visit the stadium, which is possible if there is not a game or other event you should calculate more time. We arrive a bit late and thus we couldn’t take our time with the area.

The stadium was built especially for the Olympic Games 1936 in Berlin. The athletes were accommodated in the Olympic Village (“Olympisches Dorf”) relatively nearby. During the Olympic Games all eyes were set on Berlin and the world was supposed to see how cosmopolitan and efficient the Germans are. Therefore the complex is built in a modern but grand way. The complex is one of the few buildings that weren’t destroyed by bombs; it was ‘only’ hit by machine guns.

The Olympic Bell survived its fall from the Bell Tower and being shot at. The Bell is displayed before the stadium and serves as a memorial.

Most of the stadium and its surrounding still exists. The roof of the stadium was erected later for the FIFA world cup.

Nowadays it’s used as a football stadium and as a place for music events and shows. It is also home for the Berlin football team Hertha BSC.

Im Herbst 2014 besuchten ein Freund und ich das Olympiastadium in Berlin. Es ist ein ziemlich beeindruckender Komplex. Wenn man das Stadium besucht, was außerhalb von Spielen oder Veranstaltungen möglich ist, sollte man genügend Zeit einrechnen. Wir kamen leider etwas spät an und hatten somit nicht genügend Zeit alles in Ruhe zu besichtigen.

Das Stadium wurde extra für die Olympischen Spiele 1936 in Berlin errichtet. Die Athleten wurden im Olympischen Dorf untergebracht, was relativ nah war. Während der Spiele waren die Augen der gesamten Welt auf Berlin gerichtet und die Welt sollte sehen, wie weltoffen und wirtschaftlich die Deutschen sind. Deswegen wurde der Komplex imposant und modern gebaut. Das Stadium gehört zu den wenigen Gebäuden, die nicht von Bomben zerstört wurden. Es wurde „nur“ von Maschinengewehren getroffen.

Die Olympische Glocke hat den Fall vom Glockenturm und den Beschuss überstanden. Sie ist vor dem Stadium ausgestellt und dient als Mahnmal.

Das meiste vom Olympiastadium und Außengelände ist erhalten geblieben. Aufgrund der Weltmeisterschaft wurde über das Stadium ein Dach errichtet.

Heutzutage wird es als Fußballstadium und für Musik bzw. Show-Events genutzt. Es ist auch die Heimspielstätte des Berliner Fußball Vereins Hertha BSC.
